Advanced Grid Support (AGS) is a unique EcoJoule Energy innovation that helps maintain stable and reliable local electricity networks, particularly in areas with weaker grids. It continuously monitors the network and automatically adjusts how EcoSTORE supplies power, ensuring that voltage levels stay within safe limits. By doing so, AGS reduces the risk of voltage fluctuations, overloads, and power quality issues that can affect homes and businesses.

Unlike fixed or scheduled controls, AGS responds instantly to changing conditions, such as sudden surges in demand or variations from solar generation, making the grid more resilient. It does this efficiently, using only the power needed, which helps conserve battery energy and extend battery life. For communities, this means fewer disruptions and a smoother energy supply. For network operators, it provides a reliable, low-maintenance solution that adapts to different grid types and improves overall system performance.

Australia and other regions are on a path to decarbonise their electricity grids by significantly increasing the adoption of renewable energy. Australia now boasts the highest rooftop solar penetration in the world. EcoSTORE supports the transition to renewables by providing advanced energy management solutions that enhance grid stability and capacity for renewable energy sources, particularly addressing challenges posed by intermittent solar power. EcoSTORE helps utilities integrate more renewable energy for their residential and business customers, while improving power quality and reliability.

At the core of EcoSTORE is a robust Lithium-Iron-Phosphate (LFP) battery. Chosen for its safety, stability, and durability, LFP chemistry significantly outperforms traditional Nickel-Manganese-Cobalt (NMC) batteries in real-world conditions. Its higher cycle life and superior temperature tolerance make it particularly well-suited to harsh climates. At the same time, its reduced fire risk provides peace of mind for utilities, regulators, and the public.

EcoSTORE is housed in two IP56-rated stainless steel enclosures. The first enclosure is dedicated to the battery and Battery Management System (BMS), while the second contains the Power Conversion System (PCS), switchgear, and communications hardware. This split design supports efficient cooling, safety, and maintenance, and allows for modular upgrades when required.

EcoSTORE power electronics and batteries are enclosed in separate inner cabinets, and heat shields cover the unit to prevent direct solar radiation from reaching the electronics and battery enclosures. This serves several purposes:

  • Enables an optimum thermal design that utilises temperature-controlled fans, eliminating the need for air conditioning systems. Air-conditioning systems drastically reduce the round-trip efficiency of BESS, require frequent maintenance, and produce high levels of acoustic noise, making them unsuitable for outdoor pole-mounted enclosures.
  • Minimises the internal cabinet temperatures, prolonging the life of the electronics and batteries.
EcoStore

EcoSTORE is a direct evolution of EcoJoule Energy’s EcoVAR STATCOM and leverages a shared technology foundation to deliver seamless integration and upgrade flexibility. Utilities deploying EcoVAR units can easily convert them into complete battery energy storage systems later by adding the EcoSTORE battery cabinet and connecting components. This approach preserves capital and ensures long-term investment value.

EcoSTORE uses the same EcoVIEW Engineering Access software as other EcoJoule products, providing a familiar interface for monitoring and control. This reduces training overhead and streamlines deployment across any network environment. The control platform has been validated through years of field operation across a wide range of climates, from the dry heat of inland Australia to the cold, damp conditions of Northern Europe.

EcoSTORE is not just a battery. It’s a grid support tool with advanced power quality and full four-quadrant power capability. The system can source or sink both active and reactive power independently, up to a combined apparent power rating of 40kVA, while also reducing harmonics through active harmonic filtering. In practice, this means it can provide up to 40 kW of active power or 40 kVAr of reactive power, or operate anywhere within that PQ performance envelope.

It features a true 4-wire connection (three phases plus neutral), allowing it to deliver phase-by-phase control with precision. This is critical for managing imbalances in residential and mixed-use low-voltage networks, where single-phase loads and rooftop solar installations can introduce significant power quality challenges. EcoSTORE integrates Volt-VAR functionality as standard and can maintain voltage regulation along a steady-state droop curve for each phase individually. A Volt-WATT function, as per AS4777, can also be enabled using the associated batteries.

Its patented ability to transfer active power between phases without drawing on the battery itself is a breakthrough feature. This unique capability, combined with reactive power support on a per-phase basis, enables the system to eliminate phase imbalances across a wide range of LV feeder conditions. With Volt-Var and Volt-Watt integration, advanced harmonic filtering, voltage dip ride-through support, and the unique Advanced Grid Support (AGS) algorithm, EcoSTORE not only stores energy but also actively enhances network stability, power quality, and overall system performance.

With 85 kWh of storage capacity and a 40 kVA power rating, EcoSTORE Battery Energy Storage System is perfectly sized for residential solar sponge applications. These systems store excess solar generation during daylight hours and release it during the early evening peak, addressing the challenges of the “duck curve” and enhancing local consumption of renewable energy. Whether deployed as a standalone community battery or as part of a larger distributed energy resource strategy, EcoSTORE brings control, visibility, and value to energy storage at the grid edge.

Its form factor makes it well-suited to installation on either new or existing poles (wooden or concrete) offering rapid deployment and scalability across suburban, regional, and remote settings. This flexibility, combined with its autonomous grid support features and modular upgrade path, positions EcoSTORE as a future-ready solution to the evolving needs of distribution networks, local councils, and energy communities alike.

EcoSTORE redefines what’s possible from a pole-mounted Battery Energy Storage System (BESS). It combines proven battery chemistry, cutting-edge control software, and a flexible mechanical design to deliver exceptional performance, safety, and scalability. Its grid support capabilities extend beyond traditional energy storage, transforming it into a multifunctional network asset capable of reducing peak demand, enhancing voltage stability, and facilitating greater integration of renewable energy.

EcoJoule Energy continues to lead the transition to a more distributed and resilient energy future. With the EcoSTORE, we’re empowering the industry with a storage solution that thinks for itself, installs with ease, and works tirelessly from the pole, where it’s needed most
